SFU S3 is the only one I haven't watched all the way through. I tend to agree - the best parts tended to include Brenda and her mother. Her mother has some of the best lines.
S4 I found was slightly hit and miss, too, but necessary to get through to S5, which I thought was really great. The series finale is one of the best things ever recorded, you won't regret it. I recommend NOT reading any online reviews because people include very glaring spoilers in their reviews. If I hadn't seen the episodes when they first aired, I would have been pissed. Hope the surprises haven't been ruined for you.
