Aug. 26th, 2003 12:10 amSo, I get a call from my mother today. She went to pick up my sisters and stepfather from the airport, and while at baggage claim, she gets a call on her cell. It's our next-door neighbors, calling to let her know that our house caught on fire.
Yes, you read that correctly.
Okay, so it's not as scary as it sounds (for us anyway). We live in one of those quad-type house, four houses in one unit. Apparently, the woman who lives in the house behind us had a ceiling fan in her bedroom and it short-circuited, causing a fire to break out in her bedroom. Luckily, she was home from work today, because she usually isn't. If she hadn't been home to call the fire department, all of our houses in the unit may have burned down. As it is, her house is devestated. The roof is gone and her bedroom is gutted. She also lost all seven of her house cats in the woods somewhere. Poor woman. The only thing that happened at our house was a kicked-in door and a hole somewhere in my sister's room to allow for ventilation. My mother told the neighbors to make sure someone took care of our pets, and they somehow thought there were people inside, so the fire department kicked in our door to get them out, as opposed to just breaking a window or something. But, there's already a new lock on the door and the house only smells like smoke (and is slightly soggy), so I figure we kinda lucked out. I only hope the woman behind us had family or something nearby.
So that's my news for the day. First day of classes just kinda pales in comparison. :P
