So the fandom meme has prompted me to ask a question I've wondered before. How is it that people will love a show/movie/book, and yet hate the main character so fiercely? I mean, I've seen a ton of people say they love BtVS, and yet hate Buffy's character, or people who love the Harry Potter books, and yet hate Harry. For Buffy, I can sort of see it, as there are a lot of other characters to like instead, but in HP? Harry is one of about four characters that is fleshed out at all, and he's in every single scene. For both of these, and other shows/movies/books where people hate the main character, how do people reconcile continuing to watch or read when the character they hate gets all the screen time? Personally, if I hated Buffy Summers, no amount of Daniel Osbournes or Rupert Gileses would make the show worth watching. But that's just me.

And as a sidenote? I totally do not get the rabid Draco love at all. I hate Draco so so much. He's the most boring, one-dimensional "villianous" character EVER. I'm really hoping he just doesn't show up to Hogwarts in book six. Cause I hate him.

Anyway, I'm waiting for my laundry to dry, and then I'm going to go finish spending my Christmas money. I need pants, so pants I shall buy.

I give Buffy a pass, regardless of my dislike, because, since its her show, she hass to be the catalyst for everything. That doesnt mean, however, that her character isnt the whinyest most annoying of them all.

Because she is.

OK, I'll do yr meme - but only for Buff'n'Stuff

1. Willow (all variants), Giles, Xander, Johnathon, Wesley
2. Anya, Spikerino (all variants), Angelus, The Mayor, Faith, Andrew, Tara, Glorificus
3. Joyce, Dawn, Angel, Darla, Snyder, Padre Tightpants, Adam
4. Buffy, Kennedy, The Master, Luke, Warren, The First
5. Riley

I actually had this funky thing going where when BtVS originally aired, I was really irritated with Buffy. Especially in season 7, but I think it's because I got it out of order.

However, when I rewatched on the DVDs, Buffy ended up being one of my favorites. I think a second go around with the characters made me get to know them better or something, because Buffy became one of my favorite characters.

As for Draco Malfoy, I'm one of those Draco-loving kids. I hate how J.K. Rowling doesn't develop his character, though. Every time a new one comes out, I hope that she's finally given him something - I mean, she keeps setting it up as though he will end up being some key figure in the fight between Harry and the forces of good and Voldemort and the forces of evil - I mean, he's the most well-known non-Gryffindor in Harry's class, so there must be a reason for it. And yet, Rowling just leaves him this cardboardy nothingness of a character, hinting now and then at something deeper and then dropping it. I think what I love about Draco is the fact that you can do so much with his character outside of the books - seeing the character come to life in the films is part of it, and another is the online fandom. The fact that Rowling hasn't fleshed him out has given fic writers a golden opportunity to do it themselves, and I have seen some incredible interpretations of his character.
